Who this is for
Senior finance professionals interviewing for CFO, Group CFO, FP&A Director, Head of Treasury or finance transformation seats, particularly inside GCC operating companies, listed entities and PE-backed portfolio companies.
Finance seats at the senior level are interviewed differently than most other functions. The technical bar is taken as a given; the conversation is almost always about whether the candidate can operate as a strategic partner to the CEO and the board, not as a technical lead. Most finance candidates over-prepare on technical depth and under-prepare on the strategic framing, which is where most decisions actually get made.
This guide covers the questions we hear most often across the senior finance mandates we have run, and the framing patterns that work versus the ones that don't. We have included specific guidance on transformation experience, audit-committee dynamics and capital-markets fluency, because these are the three areas where a strong technical CFO can still get filtered out at the strategic conversation.
Read this as preparation for the conversation you will actually have, not the technical interview you might have been preparing for.
